Hone your drafting skills with yet another #Pack1Pick1 featuring Grand Prix champion Kevin Jones! This pack is a tough one - we sure do love Holiday Cube! What's YOUR Pick?
Kevin's Take -
Black Lotus. If I didn't receive a screenshot of this pack I wouldn't
believe it actually happened. Three pieces of power and the best
planeswalker of all time?! Wild. That said, I'm taking the Lotus here.
It's pretty tough to not start the draft off with the most powerful card
in Magic when you have the opportunity.
It's much closer here than in almost every other case though. Time Walk
and Jace, the Mind Sculptor are both extremely strong first picks on
their own. Blue is generally the best color while Green Ramp,
specifically GU Ramp is considered to be the best archetype. Mox Jet,
while worse than Time Walk in my opinion, is clearly better than Jace
and a first pick over pretty much everything else in the cube. The rest
of the pack is a relatively weak mix of artifacts, white cards, and
green cards. It's important to consider what you're passing. If you're
in a single elimination queue the power 9 artifacts are both better than
the Time Walk. In a league where you're not going to play against the
people from your draft I would take Lotus first and then Time Walk. In a
single elimination queue I would still take Lotus but I would rank Mox
Jet ahead of Time Walk. This is because the two blue cards are very good
and likely to be picked immediately by the people to your left. There's
a value to making your opponents' decks worse and two of the three
seats to your left will be taking blue cards. There's plenty of powerful
decks you can make in cube without playing blue and first pick Lotus is
still a better card in your blue deck (or any deck) than Walk or Jace.
You're also guaranteed to play the best card you drafted when you take
Lotus. One of the players to your left is going to get passed a Jace and
then get "pass-cut" by the person who took the Time Walk. Fortunately,
this pack was opened by a friend of mine and he provided me some
interesting information about the draft. He said the player to his left
took Jace, another player messaged him asking what he took, and he used
the Black Lotus to power out an early Sun Titan into Karn Liberated. 300
